Happy New Year!

As 2007 draws to its inevitable conclusion, I look forward to 2008 with some apprehension. There are so many things that can go wrong in our world that some surely will. We can only hope that we will be able to stumble along, from one crisis to another, and with any luck be no worse off at the same time next year.

Many others, around the world, will not be so lucky. There will be wars, insurrections, rebellions, murders. Governments around the world, as they always do, will increasingly turn on their own citizens. The power elite in each country will cheer the process along. Individuals don't matter. Only the political agenda, whatever it happens to be, matters. Whether right or left, political agendas always mean control of the individual in some way.

I am not a worrier. I am a coper. Whatever happens, I try to cope, to keep my sense of humour, to make the best of any situation. Still, I always wonder why things are what they are, why some individuals have the need to control and others apparently have the need to be controlled. When I finally pass on, hopefully many years from now, I will still not have reached an understanding of this, nor would I want to, especially if the understanding is that we are all somehow born idiots and can never be anything better than idiots. I prefer my personal delusions, that individually we all have the capability of love, compassion, and understanding, and that all things being equal we could live in a harmonious and peaceful world.

I have enjoyed blogging here for another year and hope to continue in 2008. I enjoy reading the blogs on my blogroll and appreciate every reader who drops by to read my posts. This is a great community and we all support each other and that is a good thing.

To finish off 2007, I am including a song below, called Étude in E Major. My friend Paul Pedersen loves to doodle with chord patterns on his guitar and I asked him to record one of his creations on my computer before he left on a Christmas holiday. I have written a melodic track to accompany his chording. I ran out of time to polish it completely, but I hope you will enjoy it anyway. Paul plays his trusty Fender Telecaster and I play an amplified, nylon stringed Jerzey. Click the graphic or the link below it to listen.

Étude in E Major

Paul: I never did finish Silent Night. I'll explain when we have our next jam session. I really like your Étude, though. I feel as though we should flesh it out and make something bigger out if it. See you soon and Happy New year to you and yours!

  3. Atavist, I think the older I get the more apprehensive I get as well. Things aren't looking good in the world, at least not as good as through my eyes when I was a child. There was no terrorism then, at least not to the extent that many suffer from, or fear, now. I remember believing politicians, once. I'd really like to listen to your etude, but my home computer will not download it. When I get to school January 7 I'll try it then. In the meantime, many blessings on your 2008 year. It's been so wonderful to blog with you two years now!

  6. Some of us will likely depart this plane never understanding those who will not grasp their freedom and hold it dearly to themselves. Sometimes all one can do is sigh heavily and hope for a very mild epiphany of human spirit. Sometimes all one can do is remove themselves to some degree and watch sadly from the distant sidelines. We wish you the best in this endeavor in the coming year.

  7. Thanks, Luckyzmom, and right back at you! Lin: I think someone who has gone to the lengths you have understands all about freedom and how the lack of it crushes the human soul. May we all see what little is left to us not diminish further.
