Happy (Canadian) Thansgiving

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. Monday is a national holiday in Canada. Much turkey and other wonderful treats will be consumed. People will talk, laugh, party, and hopefully take some moments of reflection to be thankful for what we have here in Canada.

Most of us have a lot to be thankful for. I am certain that we will be facing trying times in our world in the years ahead, and that those of us who will be around twenty years from now will look back on these times and the decades in the last half of the twentieth century as the 'good old days.' I won't rehash on what I base my gloomy expectations right now, I simply want to be grateful that my family is healthy, that we can afford to pay our bills, and that it is sunny outside.

Whether you are among my Canadian friends or from the United States and elsewhere, I wish all of you the very best, especially that all of us will weather the economic and political storms that are surely coming in the years ahead.

Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. Have a wonderful holiday! It's almost 'frost on the pumpkin' time here, too, at serious altitude.

Just heard that one of the five ranches out here in about 1000 sq. miles MAY be coming up for sale. Nothing like solitude - should I let you know if it does? It would be nice to have a year-round sensible ranch neighbour out here.

  3. Thank you both. And lin, as tempting as that sounds, I think my Panamanian venture is going to keep both my money and my attention for several years ahead. One of my dreams though, had always been to have a huge piece of land, some horses, and neighbours no further than a day's ride away, just in case I get the urge for some socializing. I bet you'd make really good (and sensible) neighbours.

  5. Drats, wish we could have found you before your immersion in this new project - but that always seems the way. Our 2nd closest neighbors say that they will wander down this way on mules when the weather turns cooler. That is the nice thing about isolation - you really appreciate and make the best of such rare social events when they do occur. It automatically becomes a cause for joyful fiesta.

  7. Vishnusaran: Yes, I remember you! I will write you an email and will be interested to hear how your life is going.

Lin: Ah, the pioneer life... I remember as a kid reading all of the Zane Grey novels. I fantasized about living in remote, beautiful and challenging surroundings like I read about his books and others. Life is too short, sometimes, to do all of the things we would (or would have) liked to do.

Galt: Thanks. We had a delicious meal of ribs and baked beans at our new neighbours' home last night, including some delicious Czech beer and a Czech aperitif I had never encountered before. As is usual with gatherings like this, we solved all of the world's problems, only to discover this morning that the world had paid no heed and things are pretty much the same as they were 24 hours ago. Darn.
