Some borrowed inspiration . . .

Thanks to a mention at Chiriqui Chatter, I revisited a speech by Steve Jobs that I had read years ago. It nicely states what I too believe, that the recipe for personal success is that you find something you love to do, that you don't let failures get in your way, and that you live your life on your own terms.

It is a beautiful, inspirational speech, and you can read it here: Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.

  1. And in sharp contrast, we have Steve Balmer, of Microsoft...

  2. Ballmer has done a good job at Microsoft, sort of -- big sales, profits, etc., but one gets the idea that hype is more important than substance at Microsoft. Still, he moves pretty well for a big guy with some extra padding. However, I like a more dignified approach myself.

  3. That still remains one of the top commencement speeches, by google! In my political communications class last fall we were to pick speeches to analyze and three students chose that one -- and argued with the teacher that it was culturally more important than any of the other political speeches.

  4. I am just wondering why reading that made me cry. I am going to have to think about that.

  5. Luckyzmom: I wonder if it might have something to do with the fact that we are indoctrinated by the media, the educational system, the social engineers and the politicians that 'we're all in this together,' disregarding the individual human spirit that strives for something better and actually makes things happen.

Individuals accomplish. Groups discuss. Jobs and others like him are individualists, driven to achieve excellence. They may be jerks at times, but we don't have to like them, just appreciate what they give us.
