Gun Control in Canada

I saw a bumper sticker with these words on an SUV this morning:

Gun Control Means Being Able to Hit Your Target.

This is Canada, remember, and you don't see this sort of thing very often. Gun control laws in Canada are very restrictive. Our national gun registry is an abject failure. The registry has cost the Canadian taxpayer well over a billion dollars to date, an enormous amount of money even for a system that works as it should. The registry, however, doesn't work. It will likely cost hundreds of millions of wasted taxpayer dollars more, before it is ultimately trashed. That is if it is ever trashed. Once politicians set something in motion, however ridiculous, it is very difficult to stop.

In the meantime, even with all these restrictive laws, Canadians are still being shot. They aren't being shot by law-abiding citizens with registered weapons. They are shot by hoodlums, thugs who don't give a you-know-what about gun control (or any other) laws. Two days ago, a young man was shot near the end of the street where my office is located. He survived, but the last person shot in our city, didn't.

Gun crimes are committed by criminals. Law-abiding citizens have little or no protection from armed thugs. The police can't protect us. We should be able to protect ourselves, but we aren't allowed to. Every home and business may as well have a posted sign which says:

These premises and everyone inside are unprotected. Help yourself !

Does that make sense?

Wouldn't it make more sense if criminals understood implicitly, even if no actual sign with the following words were posted, that:

Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be prosecuted.

I think that would be a very effective solution.
