Coup in Ecuador... Does it Matter?

A friend of mine, having read my last post on South America, reminded me in an email that there had been a coup in Ecuador recently. I sent him this link in return. I really believe that the worst is over in the South American countries I mentioned and that there is a brighter future ahead. Part of the reason that real estate prices and the cost of living generally are low is that there is a degree of political and economic uncertainty.

I wonder how dangerous it is to live in Quito compared to, say, Toronto, or Chicago or Los Angeles. I suspect that it is much safer there, at least statistically. Anyone out there know anything about this?
