An Auspicious Beginning

My wife and son and I were driving to Barrie, Ontario, yesterday, when we came upon the delightful scene pictured above. I think we were near Orangeville. We were on our way to celebrate the marriage of my sister-in-law, Ulana, to a fine gentleman by the name of Ihor. I stopped the car and took several photographs of the beautiful rainbow arcing over the corn field.

Rainbows have long conjured up all sorts of romanticized and idealized notions in humans, and each time we see one, it is easy to understand why. They are, quite simply, beautiful. It is easy to attach imagery of hope and renewal to them, as we do quite often.

My wife gave an impromptu speech at the reception, and she used the rainbow as an indicator of "an auspicious beginning" for her sister's and brother-in-law's new life together. I think she even used the words "parabolic arc." Gotta love someone who uses words well.

As my wife did in her speech yesterday, I do now: I wish Ulana and Ihor a wonderful life together. I have given you two a a map of that proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and it is yours to enjoy. Go get it!

  2. It so reminds me of the rainbow which greeted us here shortly after our arrival. Its north and south ends both touched down within the confines of our small canyon and I took it symbolically for a certain contentedness contained within. It did not mean a guarantee of a life without challenge from without as I am sure your newly-wedded SIL will find, but it did imply to me a significance to maintaining those important bonds within our own canyon walls. My wish is that she and her love find them and ever hold them tight.

  3. Thank you both! Anyone embarking on a marriage needs all the good luck and best wishes possible. And Lin, you're right, there are no guarantees, but hope does spring eternal, right?
