Taking the Path of Least Resistance

In the context of the ongoing SWAT discussion I have been having with my son, one of the things that alarm me about a police state is that given the proclivity of law enforcers to take actions which give the appearance of 'doing something,' sometimes such actions might border on harassment or unnecessary or just plain silly. I tried to give supporting examples of such instances. A few moments ago, I read Fred Reed's latest column and, as usual, he says it all, forcefully and with humour. Go there.

When you have read his column and if you haven't already read or heard of the actual occurrence, a news account is here.

The police should be ashamed. And so should we all. How did things get to be like this?
