I assume your insurance would have increased as well.

I have only ever demanded that my place be up to code, which currently it is not and that is just for safety sake. Otherwise, where I chose to live is where I chose to live and many don't have any choice in the matter and are on the streets.

I had one slum landlord once. He rented a suite to me with a refridgerator that did not work and it was three months before I had one that did - I had to use the refridgerator in the suite above me. I stayed due to finances.

I left shortly after the sewage backed up all over my rugs and he told me that he'd clean them if it started to stink. I began ripping out the feces infected flooring right in front of him while he threatened me with losing my damage deposit.

However, I was once a tenant that left a window open during a -37 winter night and burst my water pipes. I helped with all the cleanup, but that was all I was in the position to do.

I've heard a number of stories on both ends of landlord and tenant that would cause one to shiver and dry heave. It all comes down to personal responsibility, ethics and respect.

Unfortunetly, as you say, and I agree, Landlords for the most part are ruled against, in order to protect the tenants living under the roofs owned by negligent slumlords.SuperP.https://www.blogger.com/profile/06830641369098524799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6931353.post-1154610414336547662006-08-03T09:06:00.000-04:002006-08-03T09:06:00.000-04:00I have seen apartment complexes in which I certain...I have seen apartment complexes in which I certainly would never want to live. Is it the landlord's fault? Sometimes. Some people are so short-sighted, they can only see the immediate gain they make if they spend much less on upkeep than they receive in rent. A good landlord/businessman recognizes the fact that the building is a long-term investment. He needs to have a good reputation for providing good accommodation at a reasonable price, in order to get the tenants he needs to keep going.

It is much like life in general, you get back what you put in.

One of the factors that convinced us to get completely out of the rental business in Ontario was this story: http://www.mackenzieinstitute.com/1999/newsletter100199.htm
which unfolded before our very eyes right here in good old London, Ontario.

There are scumbags everywhere, folks. Look around. They might represent you in government, teach at your school (not you, Bellezza,) sell you your next car, rent an apartment from you, or live next door. Thankfully, most people are still basically decent, if sometimes misguided.

Still, as I always say, there are places a lot worse than Canada and the United States, around this troubled world of ours. I wouldn't want to live in any of them, neither as landlord nor tenant. The Atavisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12529157597486952484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6931353.post-1154603176526341322006-08-03T07:06:00.000-04:002006-08-03T07:06:00.000-04:00At the risk of being considered biased, I learned ...At the risk of being considered biased, I learned from experience, renting our small cottage which was located next door to our home, to what appeared to be a responsible couple of motorcycle owners. This was one of the greatest mistakes in judgement I have ever made. These guys not only owned bikes, they operated a gang who stole machines and brought them to my small home where they canabalized them and sold the parts.

They installed planks up the back steps to convey their booty through the kitchen into the back bedroom where the dismantling took part.

At great risk, I went along to inspect what had become obvious and was alarmed to see, someone had stuck various knives in the bedroom wall. The flooring was destroyed.pycywWilliam Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18068135518973472144noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6931353.post-1154570259288334972006-08-02T21:57:00.000-04:002006-08-02T21:57:00.000-04:00It's also important to note - in my experience - t...It's also important to note - in my experience - the slumlords that get away with it are most often in bed with/related to politicians and bureaucrats, if not actually politicians or bureaucrats themselves.TheWayfarerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15074292938877766871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6931353.post-1154569752472231982006-08-02T21:49:00.000-04:002006-08-02T21:49:00.000-04:00What a great post!I often wonder how landlords mak...What a great post!

I often wonder how landlords make anything off their properties with the socialist establishment of government insisting they give away their product to low-lives for almost nothing, and now (in America!) a government license to steal the property if they think they can sell it out to someone who'll provide more revenue...WTF!?

They also have to deal with crooked "property management" companies that feed them a line of bunk about repairs, improvements, rentals &c while skimming and scamming their employees as well.

The apartment community in which I live has just been acquired by wonderful new owners who are a-freaking-thousand percent better than the aforementioned offal that was running the place. The improvement has been almost overnight!TheWayfarerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15074292938877766871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6931353.post-1154550010668215872006-08-02T16:20:00.000-04:002006-08-02T16:20:00.000-04:00Congratulations on your new house!
