In today's article at Next!, TDV's Jeff Berwick holds up the internet as a perfect example of how a free market should work. I agree with him. The problem, of course, is that governments everywhere are drooling over how they can best regulate and tax commerce on the internet.
The free market, even in supposed bastions of capitalism like the United States and Canada has been AWOL for decades. We have instead, Crony Capitalism where you succeed in large part due to courting favour by contributing to election campaigns, filling out countless government forms and applications, complying with sometimes truly idiotic regulations, paying for licences and of course giving up a large percentage of your income through taxation.
We can only hope that free, co-operative, mutually beneficial transactions between or among participants will become a full reality again -- even if the commercial activity is in services and goods that don't meet your personal approval. Someday. Maybe even in our lifetime. I won't hold my breath, though.
